Reflections on a Cigar Journey: From Geneva to Split and Beyond
A Personal Note on Community, Legacy, and Gratitude
Fifteen years ago, I shared my very first cigar with friends on a crisp evening in Geneva. That moment was more than a simple indulgence it became the spark for a journey that would shape my life and connect me with a remarkable community. I remember the anticipation and laughter, the slow draw of smoke, and the sense of camaraderie that blossomed in that small circle. Little did I know, this would be the beginning of a lifelong passion.
In 2013, I returned to Croatia, accepting an invitation from Marko Bilic to participate in the Cigar Smoking World Championship (CSWC) in Split. I arrived in Split with excitement and a touch of nervousness, but any apprehension quickly faded thanks to the warm welcome I received from Club Mareva members, international cigar aficionados, and even Croatian authorities. Their openness and genuine hospitality reminded me that the cigar world is unlike any other—built on friendship, mutual respect, and a shared love for the art of slow enjoyment.
That same year, I witnessed the founding of Club Mareva's cigar lounge in the heart of Split. It was an ambitious project, brought to life by visionaries who wanted to create a true home for cigar lovers. I was deeply honored to be accepted as a ‘Fundadores’ member and later as Honorable Vice President. These roles have been a source of immense pride and responsibility, and I am grateful for the trust placed in me.
Over the years, I have watched the CSWC grow from a small European gathering into a major international event, attracting qualification tournaments and competitors from across the globe. What began as a friendly contest has become a championship celebrated by cigar enthusiasts everywhere—a testament to dedication, innovation, and the unifying power of this community.
Within these circles, I have always found a profound sense of camaraderie and shared values. Whether in Split, Geneva, or any other corner of the world, the spirit of friendship and respect prevails. We celebrate together, support one another, and uphold the traditions that make our community unique.
In 2016, I was privileged to help found Cigar Rights of Europe, standing alongside fellow cigar lovers to defend and promote our rights. This endeavor reaffirmed my belief in the importance of unity and advocacy, and it remains a source of pride to see our efforts continue.
None of this would have been possible without the ongoing leadership and vision of Marko Bilic. His dedication has guided Club Mareva and the CSWC to new heights, ensuring that our shared passions are passed on to future generations. Looking ahead, I am inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the younger members, who are eager to carry forward our traditions and values.
Recently, I was deeply moved to be nominated as Honorable President of Club Mareva. This recognition is not just a personal honor, but a reflection of the journey we have all shared. I am profoundly grateful to every member, competitor, and friend who has been part of this adventure.
As I reflect on these years, I am filled with pride and gratitude. Our community is strong, our legacy secure, and our future bright. Thank you all for the memories, the friendship, and the countless cigars savored together.
With appreciation and respect,
Ivan MAZURANIC
